Clearway Energy is developing the County Line wind farm in Northern Maine, on private commercial timberland in southern Aroostook County. County Line will generate enough electricity for approximately 325,000 homes, representing a historic economic development opportunity to benefit Aroostook County residents and businesses.
In August 2026, the Maine Public Utilities Commission awarded County Line a long-term power purchase agreement. By locking in a stable power price for 20 years, this project will help ease the burden Maine families and businesses are facing from rising power costs, while at the same time bringing real economic investment to Aroostook County. Clearway will continue outreach to the project area’s communities and residents, conducting rigorous environmental and engineering studies over the next several years, aiming to begin construction in 2030.

Clearway Energy Group has been developing County Line for nearly a decade, collaborating with and hearing from Aroostook County residents and with local landowner partners. Stable energy costs for Maine families & businesses
The wind provides an abundant source of no-cost, inflation-proof fuel to help meet Maine's rising energy demand.
The Maine Public Utilities Commission estimates that County Line and planned transmission upgrades to connect this project to the regional grid will deliver substantial cost savings to Maine ratepayers – to the tune of $400 million over the project life. Maine will purchase 75% of the electricity to benefit Maine customers, with a smaller portion being purchased by other New England states.

The wind farm will be sited entirely on private commercial timberland leased in southern Aroostook County, far from population centers. Final design is currently underway, to be informed by rigorous environmental studies as required by the permitting process.
No public land will be involved.

Clearway aims to begin construction in 2030, with an estimated in-service date in the early-to-mid 2030s. We’ve had conversations with several qualified contractors and look forward to creating new workforce opportunities in the region.
Yes. A new transmission line is needed to connect this new Northern Maine generation to the ISO New England regional grid. The Maine PUC selected Avangrid to develop and construct that infrastructure. Avangrid’s proposed route runs along existing transmission corridors, minimizing the impact that this new line will have on local communities.
